Borneo Princess

Trade Winds currently still sits for sale in Opua, New Zealand waiting on new adventures and new owners. The price is now listed in NZD to avoid the unfavorable USD/NZD exchange rate and hopefully to attract buyers. Now it is a NZ designed and built boat for sale in NZ and listed in NZ dollars. The adventures of Koelby, Jessica, and Tomas together on the high seas will continue at a later date once the Archer and Bauer are older. In the mean time, I have jumped ship to the Borneo Princess under the US Flag as the First Officer.

Borneo Princess is a 25 meter steel catamaran with two impressive 450 Hp Caterpillar engines and 2 15 kW Caterpillar generators. The boat is 10 meters wide and has impressive internal and external space. My adventures start in Balikpapan Indonesia on the island of Borneo. The city of Balikpapan is one of the largest on Borneo with 750,000 people as of the last census. There are so many people who live under the view of the government though, I bet the real population is closer to 1M.

If you have not experienced driving in Indonesia you are in for an eye opening experience. The lines on the road are merely serving suggestions. Two lanes of traffic become three, three lanes at an intersection become five and scooters rule the roads. I surprisingly never saw and accidents with scooters while I was there. While driving through a round-a-bout keep in mind that everyone drives straight through the lanes and does not follow the circle. Now you are warned.

I am staying in an old expat suburb called Balikpapan Baru in the area of Vancouver. There are also areas called Arizona, Beverly Hills, etc. Most of the expats are slowly being driven out as the oil and gas and mining jobs all dry up and the homes are being bought by Indonesians. I have been told that because the government subsidizes the oil so heavily they also limit the size of engines in cars and scooters to the more fuel efficient models (makes sense). But, on the weekends they allow the big engine cars and bikes to be driven with special permits. So on the weekend you see the big V-8 engine European cars and the super-sport bikes on the road or being driven around the residential areas. On Friday and Saturday night the teenagers drive their scooters around the town with the mufflers off creating a horrible racket and imagining how cool they are!

The boat is up a river at a barge refit yard being worked on by a contractor up there. I will be returning next week hopefully to help the final stages of construction. I am packing up my stuff to put in storage here in Melbourne and will ship it by boat to the states when I can figure out a place to store it. I will update with pictures and journal hopefully every other day.

Onward and Upward

Hello All!
It has been a long time since the last post, SORRY!!!!
Let's see, since the last post the following events have happened:
  • Left American Samoa and arrived in Tonga
  • Swam with Humpback Whales
  • Swam with Pacific Reef Squid and watched them change colors from black, to grey, to blue, to yellow, to purple, etc
  • Found a huge section of whale bone pelvis on the beach at anchorage 16 in Va'va'u in Tonga and traded it with the locals for two carved necklaces.
  • Gave the family at anchorage 16 a ride back to town on our boat to include their seven kids and wife. Jenna played doctor and fixed up cuts and scrapes with medical supplies on the boat.
  • Left Tonga and arrived in Fiji
  • Planned on a three week boat repair which ended up taking nine weeks
  • Met an amazing Fiji family who invited us over to their house about twice a week for dinner and Kava
  • Left way too late into the cyclone season from Fiji to NZ for our parents to be comfortable
  • Arrived in NZ two days before Christmas
  • Stayed in a little marina called Tutukaka for three months
  • Bought a black Volvo V70
  • Worked furiously on the boat to repair everything before vacationing with Gail and John in NZ
  • Toured Auckland for a week with Gail and John while staying in St. Heliers
  • Took an amazing tour of a glow worm cave called Waikato
  • Flew to Sydney and saw the Opera House, Sydney Harbor Bridge, and The Rocks to name a few
  • Once Gail and John left Jenna and I hung around Sydney for another couple weeks until flying to Melbourne for 8 days to spend some time with a couple we met in Fiji who were buying their new sailboat!!
  • Decided in Melbourne to move to Melbourne and start a business
  • Flew from Melbourne back to Auckland and worked on fixing the boat for another month
  • Sold the black car and drove down to beautiful Lake Taupo for a weekend
  • Loaded all our personal belongings on a pallet to load on a container ship to ship to Melbourne
  • Flew back to the states to sell another car and pack up all our stuff
  • Jenna flew to VA with her mom to visit college friends and to Boston for a friend's wedding
  • Tom took the Greyhound bus to Yakima to pick up the white Volvo and then drove to Silverdale to pick up all the stuff in storage in load it in a Penske truck
  • Packed up the stuff in Oregon and put on a container ship headed to Melbourne
  • Sold the white Volvo and all the furniture
  • We are going to house sit while in Melbourne for the first year so we don't have to rent a house or move kitchen or furniture to Australia
  • In the mean time I (Tom) have taught myself CAD and have designed a platform bed that Jenna and I are going to produce to sell that includes reclaimed wood side boards and an acid etched/stained polished concrete headboard!

Jumped the Gun

Unfortunately, we can't actually take our new furry friend with us because Fiji requires all cats to have been rabies vaccinated at least six months prior to entering the country. I even emailed and asked if it was okay because American Samoa is rabies-free, but apparently since it's not officially rabies-free (probably some paperwork that was never completed) it doesn't count. Alas! But Mona said she'd send us pictures sometimes!
GUESS WHO'S 30?!?! Yesterday marked 30 years since Tom was born and one year since we left Seattle, and boy, how far we've come! It's been a wild ride sometimes but worth every minute! We hiked what seemed like forever and Tom got to go geek out over some abandoned rusty cable car towers, and I rescued three baby chicks from a ditch to deep for them to jump out of.
We're leaving for Tonga tomorrow, and here are some highlights of American Samoa:

Sunset over Pago Pago harbor

At Tisa's Barefoot Bar by the beach!

Morning fog

Sarong it's right!

Something's missing here...

Some new friends we made while out for a walk to see some cannons

Wut?!

Jenna to the rescue!

New Crew Member!

Hey! Guess what? We found a sad looking cat that was living out behind the McDonalds, raised a bunch of money for it (shout out if you shared and/or donated!) and took it to the vet! We're planning on taking him with us on the boat if it works out. Here's a few before-pictures:

It's true...

The Edlund's have bailed on the boat again... We left the boat on June 29th but our adventure was not over just yet. Check out Jessica's Journal for a complete account of the rest of our adventure in the next few days when I have better internet. Tons of pics to come.

Good times in Raitea

Hey all! We had a wonderful time with Koelby and Jessica in The Society Islands. Jenna and I are having fun around Raitea and Tahaa by ourselves waiting for new crew members. We are planning on going up to the coral gardens which overlook Bora Bora tomorrow or the next day.
Ohh yeah!!! We bought a new Suzuki 6 Hp outboard.
It is so pretty.
We have started working on the rust on the boot top and at some of the leaking saloon windows.
Here is the bay we left on the south part of Raitea.
The above picture is the cute seaside quay we are moored next to. The views of he outer reefs are amazing.
The sailing around the lagoon has made the trip worthwhile in my opinion. With the headsail out lounging on the level deck with no waves we cruise around at 3-5 knots. Easy breezy!!
Up next: Bora Bora, Suvarov, Pago Pago: America Samoa (for some golf cart batteries & new iPhone screen), Tonga.
